It was like Christmas time. Snow was falling, people were gathered together in good spirits and at the Al Rosa Vila, it looked like the Grinch That Stole Christmas was being acted out on stage. And playing the Grinch was California’s newest sensation, The Exies. And instead of stealing trees, hams and decorations, The Exies stole the show, leaving Trapt wondering where it went.

It seemed an odd fit to have The Exies, who will be out with Everclear soon, to be opening for the heavier Trapt. Trapt has that now-famous Limp Bizkit mix of rap and metal going for them, where The Exies are a more power-chord driven band rooted in harmonies and lyrically reminiscent riffs. Just straight out, The Exies is an awesome live band. Many fans showed up solely to see Trapt sing their radio-sensation Headstrong. But those radioheads were blown away after seeing The Exies. One fan said, “They just blew me away. I have never heard them or knew what to expect, but they were so great.”

Led by Scott Stevens on guitar and vocals, The Exies are supporting their Virgin Records release Inertia and enjoying hearing their single My Goddess played in the radio and television. Though here in Columbus, the song is played few and far between, the few hundred music lovers who saw The Exies this night were sure to want to hear more.

As The Exies continue to tour, and especially with bands that fit more their style of music, it will be interesting to see how far this band will go. There is no doubt the talent and sound is there for this band to make it huge, it’s a matter if people are ready to pick up on their style. Although there are elements of pop, rock, metal and everything in between, The Exies have something that just separates them from the pack. Some is due to the fact that each song is driven by something different. Sometimes, it’s Stevens’ voice in the driver seat. Other times, it’s Dennis Wolfe’s drums that lead the song down the long and lonely highway. But no matter what the lead is, the song is always backed with great harmonies, good lyrics, a strong vocal and succinct riffs.

For those that did not make it to the Al Rosa or came after The Exies played, it is more than highly recommended to see this band when they come back through with Everclear. And for those that saw this up-and-coming band, it will no doubt be a reunion of sorts, as many will be headed back for another fix of Stevens and the boys known as The Exies,
