Are you getting tired of all the connections with the Liverpool thing?
Charlie Turner: Yeah, we get asked about it a lot because that’s where we’re from. As far as we’re concerned, there’s not many bands out now that sound like us. And it’s just ‘cause of Liverpool’s heritage with the Beatles, that’s why we get asked about it. But I don’t think we sound like a Liverpool band, although we are influenced by the place that we grew up. After all, that’s where we recorded the album.
Did the sound of the Dead 60's surprise you?
CT: No, it kinda of evolved really. It started out with old school funk and then we got into reggae and we just rehearsed and played gigs. But when the album came out, we kind of got into different things. Yeah, so it kind of just evolved and it kind of surprised us that we nailed what we wanted to do on the record; which is the different sounds that we like kind of mixed together. All that hodgepodge sounds make up The Dead 60's.
In Europe, there are festivals but they are like two day affairs. The Warped Tour is kind of like a festival every day. Do you have to pace yourself drinking on this tour?
CT: Yeah, I guess we’ll have to find out. We’ll give it our best shot. Every night is a big party so I guess you have to kind of watch yourself so we’ll play it by ear and see how it goes.
How excited are you playing the Warped Tour with it being like a festival everyday for months?
CT: It’s just amazing really. There’s so many bands there. We’ll just see how it goes. I know what your saying though, cause like the UK, festivals are just like a two day affair and then everyone goes home where this just kind of rolls on and on....it’s an exciting prospect.
Are there any bands that your excited to see on this tour?
CT: Yeah, I’m kind of excited to see like the and check out some of the American based underground songs that we haven’t heard yet and checking out stuff like that so, I’m sure there will be bands when we get there that we’ll really like.
So, are you looking at this as play time or work time or a combination of both?
CT: I think you have to look at it as a combination of both. We are going to enjoy it as much as we can but it is a good opportunity for us to get it. I’m sure there will be a good after party and hopefully we’ll do good shows as well.
Obviously you came from a couple of different bands. Is this where you thought you would be at this point or maybe farther ahead?
CT: I think it’s probably further ahead than what we imagined really, but that’s one of the nice things about it. It’s just that we concentrated so much on this album and then all of a sudden we find ourselves in America and going all over the world kind of thing. You get excited about it but when it’s actually happening it’s pretty cool and yeah, we’re really enjoying it.
You spent some time opening for Garbage. What did you think when you first heard of that?
Garbage is lovely people. Their crew and everybody is really cool. It’s really cool the first time we’re in America, usually we would only play to a few people and now we can play for a bigger audience so that’s cool.
Is there anything you have learned from touring with them for maybe your next record or tour?
CT: Yeah, we’re very different types of bands with production and stuff. They’ve shown us a few shots of Tequila that were much needed, as well as what good Tequila versus bad Tequila is, and that is a very important touring lesson.
It always leads back to drink with you Brits....laughing...I think a few bands will drink themselves silly trying to keep up with the likes of you..
CT: Yeah, I’m sure it will be a good time. It’s always good fun.Cheers.
