So, A Dozen Furies on Ozzfest 2005. How's it going?
Dude, It's going really well. Having a good time and trying to avoid the heat right now. Hanging out under a tent outside our RV to catch some shade. Sipping back on some brews.
I don't think there is a break from the heat.
Once you step out in front of 10,000, it all goes away pretty quickly. At least until you are done, and then the compression headache kicks in. That really sucks.
You are doing some one-off shows. Some pretty large, some small clubs. For you as a band, which is more exciting to play, 10,000 kids where you lose intimacy, or the small clubs where it's in your face.
I mean having the intimacy setting is all right, but after playing out here and averaging 8,000 people watching a day, you just can't beat that. We're geared now more towards bigger crowds. A lot of people out here don't know all of our stuff yet; we are not like a majority of the bands out here on Ozzfest that have at least one CD out already. So we have to win the crowd over with our energy. We seem to be really successful at it and so far, in these five shows, we are one of the top selling bands on the second stage right now, and all we have is a 3-song EP. Everything goes real well live, so I think we are geared more to the big crowds. It doesn't matter that its 95 degrees, all that slips our minds as soon as we hit our first note. I have to say that it's a little bit better in front of the big crowds.
Does it surprise you are all at how fast you were able to play in front of a large crowd?
It's amazing, really. I have been in music for 10 years, and everyone in this band has been in music for at least seven years. We hit it off with this band and things have just opened up for us. So, it's pretty amazing for us to be out here and getting this kind of exposure as a band. This band has been together for about two years now, and I haven't heard of too many stories from other bands where it has happened that quickly.
Do you find yourself trying to watch some of the seasoned bands, such as Rob Zombie, to see how he conducts himself both on and off the stage?
Well, we are always going to do what we do, but I just got done watching Zombie's set. He handles himself so professionally and has been doing it for a long time, and I can see us there in five, six years. We are a completely professional band. Everything we do we do in a professional manner. We handle ourselves professionally. We are not an immature band that got stuck in a position where we were forced out in front of a bunch of people and we act like idiots or something. But it is cool to watch those who have been there before us and have already made a name for themselves. But we do fine. We handle ourselves well.
You guys got to play CBGBs not that long ago, you are now on Ozzfest. Do you ever kind of pinch yourself at how fast it has happened? Only two years.
Man, it hasn't hit me yet, and I hope it never does. Because what happens once it does hit you? It is only down hill from there. Or some people might get a big head and decide they don't want to go to the FYE booth to sign some autographs or they would rather go out and drink beers. We are all about meeting the people that are into our music. And even though we are new at this, we are still about meeting fans.
About a month and a half ago, you performed a benefit in Texas for the blind with Erykah Badu. How weird was that or how normal was it since the band A Dozen Furies may get into another genre besides metal.
Man, if you look at our iPods, you would see everything from the Bee Gees, to Autumn Offering to Al Green to Kelly Clarkson to Journey. All of us love music and respect everybody who does their own thing. On Ozzfest now is Jada Pinkett-Smith, Will Smith's wife, and her band Wicked Wisdom. We will check them out. Music is awesome to us and we are not worried about anyone else. We do our own thing and enjoy every facet of music, basically.
To go back to how fast this has happened for A Dozen Furies, did you know when this band formed that it was going to make it to this level?
I am not surprised at where we are now at all. Each of us has grown through our own musical experiences, from being in different bands. But once we all got together and wrote a couple of songs, I knew instantly we were going to be successful. None of us could have pictured the band here and doing what we are doing, but God willing it will continue to grow and our music will just keep getting better. I don't see anything putting the breaks on us any time soon. So, hopefully we will do this for quite a while and never run out of good music to put out there to people.
You mentioned not having an album out now, although there is the 3-song EP. How frustrating is it to see 8,000 people a day get into the band but not have a record for them to buy.
That was what I was saying earlier. We just rely on our energy. We have seen a few people when I was up there who were going off with me and trying to sing along and mouthing words that are not even close to what I am singing, but its cool to see people trying. We just go out there with 100% energy every day and let people know we are a real band and not someone that MTV scraped up. I think people respect us now and we are winning people over every day. There are a lot of people who come up and buy our EP. It's and enhances CD that has some video of us making the record, so people can get to know us that way, too. Wherever we go, people buy our EP and seem to dig us, so from that aspect we are doing really well.
Is there a date slated for the release of the record?
September 13.
And will you be the first one in the store to buy it?
I don't think I will be. I think my parents or some other parents of the band members will be, or some friends or someone. There is always that someone who is like, "I was the first one to get it!" We are just happy jamming to the master copy we have now. We listen to it and are like, "Wow, we wrote a really good record." Not to pat ourselves on the back too hard, but we are really impresses with what we accomplished. We are all happy with each other's performances on the CD.
