Funeral For A Friend- Matt Davies
How excited are you about being out on the Vans Warped Tour?
It's super cool man...I grew up as a teenager listening to a lot of punk rock bands and saying to myself that if I ever make it in a band I would love to do the Warp Tour with any band and now I can say that. We're generally excited and thankful for the opportunity to play America again which is one of our favorite places to play and the kids are really receptive. I think they understand where we're coming from with our music and we couldn't be more happier to tell you the truth.

How do you think you'll keep up with the drinking at the at BBQs? You Brits are well-known for your taste for the ale.
We'll see, we'll see. We'll lay down our cards and we'll live by the rules of we'll drink until we can't drink no more or at least on our asses. We're not heavy drinkers but when we do I choose to enjoy it. We stand up for what we believe in and we can get rowdy, we can kick ass I think....at least we believe we can kick ass when we're that drunk anyway....it will be interesting. There are some friends on that tour also, so it will be good times....definitely good times.

How serious are you taking this tour and how much do you just want to have fun with it?
I think it's equal. You don't want to take anything too seriously because that takes the fun out of everything. To me music is such a big deal and such a big part of my life that for me I think if I took it too seriously all the time then I would lose faith, and interest and love for it I think so, there's a professionalism we have when we play but we have fun with it believe it or not...we do, we do. Sometimes, it may look as though we are deep in thought pondering what is going on with the world but we're actually having fun but we try to keep it professional but also rock out. I just believe that having fun helps connect you with the audience that your playing to. If you don't enjoy what your doing or having fun with what your doing then their not going to have fun, their not going to get caught up in it, their not going to feel the unique public experience. I think that's what bands do is try to pull the audience into it so that it becomes an unique almost family environment which is something that I've always wanted to do as a band.

There seems to be a little more substance bands or maybe darkness or heavier music to this year's line-up, Funeral For A Friend being one of them. Do you enjoy the music with an intelligent edge?
I think it's a weird situation. You grow up with music at that time you don't really feel that kind of music permeating yo,u but as you grow older you enjoy it more. Now I'm a huge fan of music with substance and elements of intelligence. It's very direct. It just enables you to take something from it and for you to say that our music is something to think about is a great honor. It means we're doing our job. I guess the influences growing up kind of sticks with you. I'm a big punk fan and the rest of the guys are big metal fans so some of our pasts help us create Funeral for a Friend.

You mentioned having some friends on this tour. Is there any bands that your looking forward to seeing?
We're good friends with some of the guys from Bleeding Through. I want to see Brand New Sin again. I really like that band and the Offspring.....man, when I was a kid the Offspring's Smash album was like the record that got played all the time. Now, I get to see Offspring play in an environment that I didn't think I'd ever see and maybe I can have a drink with Noodles. There are other bands that I would like to see but can't think of off the top of my head.

How do you feel Funeral for a Friend fits into the whole environment of the Warped Tour?
I think deep down, well, I know deep down I'm a punk rock kid at heart, although my girlfriend would argue that I'm not because I've never spent the night in a train station after a show. I think there's no bullshit with us. It's about being honest and truthful and believing in yourself and we have faith in our ourselves, we're exactly that kind of band, there's no pretentiousness, there's no egos, we're exactly five idiots from the valley in South Wales and we'll see how that translates to five idiots from South Wales on the Warped Tour. We'll see how it goes. I think we'll be nervous and people we'll be wondering who we are but it's all part of the charm.

Europe is well known for 1-3 day festivals, so how are you going to prepare for something that is really pretty daunting?
I don't think you get prepared, I just think you say to yourself this is how it's going to be. You go on, you play for 20 minutes and then your off and you just try to deal with it and have the best time possible and if things fuck up, they fuck up. That's why it's punk rock after all. You just keep on playing, even if nothing is coming out of your amplifier then you just keep on playing, nobody will notice. We have played in very different situations on different tours and stuff and we had to learn how to deal with it and I think just to have fun is the key, just to enjoy yourself no matter what and try as much as I'd like, I don't ever want to do a 10 minute stand up comedy sketch waiting on my band mates to find out what's wrong with their amplifier. That happened once before a long time ago and I don't ever want to relive that again.

How cool is it going to be hang out with all the kids?
I think it's very important. I think the musical background that we come from and the way music is today is less and less on the band and the audience and more of it being more of an evolved environment. I really appreciate the fact that I can relate to what most kids are feeling. A couple of years ago when I was watching bands play and we want to be as cool as possible to every kid that wants to come up and talk with us and we'll do exactly the same. We'll just walk around and bum around. It's cool, it's a good environment to be in. It keeps you grounded, I think, it shoots away all the ego's and the pretenses of Rock Star attitudes.
