Your tour consists of Candlebox and Buckcherry, both were bands that really came out about 8 years before they should have as their sound was a little ahead of the trend. Where do you see Royal Bliss fitting in with today’s music trend?
I think we might be setting a new trend that was an old trend, which is playing Rock and Roll to have some damn fun. We just do our thing without thinking too much about about it. I think bands take it too serious sometimes. You just have to be yourself and let it out and have a good time. We dont worry about trends. I think people are ready for something real instead of the same ol' cookie cutter bullshit.
Rock on the Range just keeps getting larger and this year, you are kicking it off which is a pretty tall order. How do you prepare for that?
Have a few beers and and try to kick as much ass as possible. We cant fucking wait!!!
How many bands are you going to try and watch the day you are playing?
In order of priority: Clutch/Avenged Sevenfold/Montly Crew/ Blue October.
With what the band has been through, did you ever think Royal Bliss would get to this point?
Yes, We have had some tough times, but they just make us stronger. We dont know how to do anything else, so we believe that if we just keep going we can go as far as we want. You have to set your goals high.
Salt Lake City seems more known musically for its punk scene. How was it for a rock and roll band to break out from the city?
It's tough, because of the stereotype everybody has about Salt Lake. It's hard to get people to take you serious. Utah has a great music scene though, in every style of music. The fans there are amazing and thier support of us is awesome, we could not have made it this far with out them.
You dropped out of college almost immediately from meeting Chris Harding. What to ld you it would be the right choice? Because I am sure your parents were thrilled with the news =).
Oh yeah! They were real excited. =They always wanted me to be in a rock band. It was that or an exotic dancer. (I got Some Moves) That night I first played with the guys was awesome. We wrote three or four songs that night and the chemistry was unreal. I always wanted to be in a band and these guys were excactly what I was looking for. I am glad i made the decision. School Sucks Balls! (Stay in school kids.)
How does the band write and is it still coming as freely as it did after meeting in the pizza parlor?
We just start jamming and hope we come up with something good. We have done it the same way forever. We just let the music happen and never try and force it. We have been real lucky. No writers block so far.
Your record, After the Chaos II, has a pretty apropos title. But do you think the band would be as tight and solid without the chaos?
No. It's the whole, "What does not kill you makes you stronger," mentality. We went from being a ban, to being brothers. I got some pertty good lyrics out of that chaos as well. There is a postive in every negative. Cheesy but true.
What did the band do to celebrate the signing with the label and then the release of the record?
We threw a party in downtown Salt Lake and invited all our family and friends that had helped us and supported us so much through the years. When we signed it was like the whole city of Salt Lake signed a deal. When people say it takes a village, well it took a city to break us.
Although this is the first “major” label release, Royal Bliss has been around and touring for a while, most likely in a van with more rust than paint. How has that experienced humbled you, if at all?
We are extremely humble. The music industry is not the same as it used to be. We are happy to be doing what we love and traveling all over the place meeting new people, eating some kick-ass food and playing with some amazing bands. If it all ended tomorrow, it would have been worth it. We have had an amazing ride. Being in a band nowadays is a lot of work. It's not all strippers and blow anymore. When I am done with this interview I have to vacuum the motorhome and do some dishes. Rock and Roll, HUH?
Lastly, back to Rock on the Range. For a band like Royal Bliss, what does the opportunity to be on a show like this mean and what can the good people of Columbus expect at noon when you kick off the weekend?
Its amazing for us to be on a show like this., We were just happy to get free tickets to the show and I am kind of glad we go on first so we dont have to miss a lot of bands. I hope we get to do it next year as well. I know it will be early for a lot of people, including myself. But we are going to get up there and rock as if it was midnight and we were a fifth of Beam into it. We cant fucking wait. See you there!!
