Lacuna Coil, Columbus, OH, Lifestyles Community Pavilion, April 6, 2006
The tale of Lacuna Coil is one of near misses, close calls and surprise endings. As the band to take from in the late 90s, several band members came and went (including some just after three live shows), but it was with the help of more established European metal bands that Lacuna Coil was able to carry on. In fact, the first recorded EP did not feature duel guitarists, but rather one guitar and a keyboardist. But as the new millennium rolled around, so did the sound that Lacuna Coil fans have become accustomed.

Just days before their news Century Media release Karmacode debuted at #28 on the Billboard 200, Lacuna Coil took the stage for 45 minutes opening for Rob Zombie at the Lifestyles Community Pavilion. Although Christina Scabbia gets most of the ink when press speaks of Lacuna Coil, fellow singer Andrea Ferro goes unmentioned but definitely not unnoticed on stage. Ferro's voice is a great divergence from Scabbia's angelic vocals, and lends the metal to the band's harmonies.

As Scabbia and Ferro receive most of the spotlight, literally and figuratively, the band behind the duel singers are some of the tightest and best performers around. Cristiano Migliore plays a solid guitar, helping keep the rhythm for the entire show, but drummer Cristiano Mozzati keeps the timing superbly.

A few years ago, Lacuna Coil was promoting the fact of bring the first Italian band to play Ozzfest, and since those second stage days, Lacuna Coil as come full circle to take the main stage at the 2006 Ozzfest, and no longer continue to taut their origin of existence, but the music behind the band.

Now, the first single "Our Truth" is making the airwaves, but during the live show, it was the hits off previous CD Comalies that got the crowd moving at Lifestyles Community. "Heavens A Lie" really helped break the band on the US scene, and "Swamped" helped to solidify the band as a band that can breech the gap between Europe and the US. So, when Lacuna takes the stage in the US, they become a metal band with melody and play to the strengths that are garnering them such praise in the states.

Rather than play some of their more instrumental and musical tracks, Lacuna played nearly 45 minutes of their heaviest material, and songs that may not have been recorded heavy were played with a different strength and force that the audience was able to mosh with. Not to mention that Lacuna uses their two singers in such an unusual way that it makes for an interesting and new style of metal. Rather than just use Scabbia to sing the higher harmonies, Ferra's grunting and metal rasp often becomes the undertone and Scabbia's saintly voice is used to do the grunt work. As the band played their dark, yet positive music, the lights were kept deep blue and red to ensure the mood was kept ominous and unpromising. This was a 45-minute set that fans of both Lacuna and Zombie could both enjoy and delve into.

Lacuna Coil continues to directly support Rob Zombie, and will then take the main stage of Ozzfest all summer long.
