Brooke Hogan, Columbus, OH, Lifestyles Community Pavilion, December 7, 2006
Brooke Hogan brought her fresh attitude and familiar sound to Lifestyles Community Pavilion as one of several acts for WNCI's annual Jingle Ball holiday show. With merely 30 minutes to play, Hogan filled her set with high-energy dances, a voice that sounded superior over the not-so-high quality sound system and even brought Paul Wall with her to sing her single, About Us.

It seems as though Hogan is getting an undeserving reputation of her actual intellect and talent from the VH-1 show Hogan Knows Best. When speaking with Hogan, there is an undercurrent of confidence yet still humbleness about her music that shows she is taking this career seriously. Although Hogan admits to thinking about the next record and the possibilities therein, she focused her set on her debut record, Undiscovered. Perhaps the introduction from her dad, wrestler Hulk Hogan, may be a bit much, Brooke Hogan proved that she deserves to be taken seriously as an artist. Still only 18, Hogan definitely has room to grow and improve, but the basics are definitely in place for her to be a successful pop artist.

Dressed in a glittery bra-top and hot pants, Hogan looked the part of today's pop star, with as much skin showing as possible. Hogan danced along with her dancers for nearly the entire 30 minutes, rarely taking time to take a breath and seems comfortable in her role of having to look as good as she sounds. But with that look comes constant scrutiny, and the likelihood that critics and music fans will not take her talent as seriously as if she wore a gown and sat at her piano to sing. No matter the case, for an 18-year-old, Hogan is taking steps to be a pop star, with little apology and much confidence. Hogan realizes the path she took as a musical artist, and for right now seems comfortable where she is at with herself. No one can predict which path her future musical endeavors will take, as the longevity for both reality television shows and pop stars seem to be getting shorter and shorter. But Hogan has the talent and voice to combat the short-term memories of today's society if she decides to take that path.

Hogan showed signs of becoming comfortable with her live performance during the brief set. What some may forget is Hogan, although on television and with a celebrity father, is still new to playing music live. As most artists and bands hone their talent at 18 playing local clubs and venues, Hogan must hone that talent on stage in front of thousands. She is growing as a performer each night, but her learning curve should be examined as any other artist. Although there is plenty to critique in Hogan's performance, Hogan is showing signs of finding herself versus what critics and labels say she should be, and the only place to really find that self-awareness in on stage. If Hogan decides to take her path versus what will be dictated to her by her surroundings, a long-term career is definitely probable. However, if she takes the path of pop diva that uses her body more than her talent that could prove for a short career in which her actual talent never blossoms and becomes recognized.
